Houston Landing invites you to join politics reporter Paul Cobler as he moderates a Q&A with Dan Simons, Republican candidate for Harris County district attorney. His Democratic opponent Sean Teare was scheduled to appear, but canceled. The two are competing to be Harris County’s next district attorney.

“(This is) an opportunity for the public to observe an interview and see the candidates in that unfiltered setting,” Cobler said. “Your vote matters most in local elections.”

Crime consistently is listed as one of Houstonians’ biggest concerns, and this is a chance to hear from the two men vying to lead the county’s approach to public safety, a position of tremendous influence over how Houstonians live.

The district attorney represents the state of Texas in criminal proceedings in the Harris County criminal district courts and county criminal courts at law. The office investigates and prosecutes crimes, and works through the grand jury system to file charges against individuals.

Teare is a former supervisor of the district attorney office’s vehicular crimes division, and describes himself as a progressive prosecutor who is “smart” on crime, not “soft.”

Simons is a former assistant district attorney and chief prosecutor in a misdemeanor court who experienced homelessness and poverty throughout his childhood.

Community members who vote have “so much power over the affairs of our country, and the policies that are (or are not) implemented in our city, county, state and nation,” event organizer Daniel O. Candelaria Olvera said. “Voting is the first step in being active in participating in civic engagement.”

Candelaria Olvera is with Avenue, an affordable housing organization, and one of the many groups sponsoring the event, including the Harris County Department of Education and the Northside Chamber of Commerce.
