As a Houstonian for the past decade, it has been an honor to learn and document through photography what brings residents joy, what makes folks tick and how this city comes together to celebrate its diversity. We hope this collection of our favorite photographs published in February achieved these goals.

I often tell photojournalists that it takes multiple attempts to cover an event or scene before they truly understand who and what they are taking pictures of. How the light reflects on different surfaces, transforming the scene. What the best background is. Or what the most flattering angles are.

Every photographer always comes back with a little surprise — their own imagination and interpretation of what makes Houston, Houston.

The photo department at the Houston Landing seeks to provide insight, evoke emotion, and challenge preconceived notions people have about the communities we cover.

Photojournalism is another way of seeing and understanding the story.

Photojournalism is journalism.
