An eighth-grade student at Houston ISD’s Marshall Middle School died following a medical emergency at school Wednesday, district officials confirmed.
“We are devastated by the loss of a Marshall Middle School student. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to this student’s parents and family,” HISD wrote in a statement Thursday. “We appreciate the swift response from multiple (emergency medical services) and Houston fire department teams that responded to our 911 call.”
Marshall Middle Principal Jeff Bridgewater communicated about the incident in a Wednesday email message to families obtained by the Houston Landing.
“It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community,” Bridgewater wrote Wednesday evening. “Today, one of our 8th grade students died. This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school, especially our students.”
District administrators did not answer questions about the nature of the emergency or the medical situation of the student. They said they are continuing to gather information on what happened.
Bridgewater told families Marshall Middle staff were prepared to respond to students’ ongoing mental health needs. About 440 students were enrolled at the campus on Houston’s north side as of Wednesday.
“We have counselors available for any student who may need any type of assistance surrounding this loss,” he wrote.
