Many Houston Community College students and staff say the lack of food options on some campuses causes them to skip meals or lose out on academic activities.

It’s widely accepted that food insecurity is linked to worse academic performance. At HCC, roughly one in four students is considered “economically disadvantaged,” while four campuses are located in designated “food deserts” where family incomes are low and nearby access to a supermarket is sparse.

Some HCC campuses offer food pantries to students, staff and faculty members. Known as “Eagle Markets” the pantries are stocked with groceries such as canned food, non-perishables and some produce.
